Travelers in the northern part of Stokes County may find their commutes to the southern part of the county will be a little longer in coming months as the N.C. Department of Transportation works to replace the bridge over Snow Creek.
The work, which will begin on Monday, Aug. 24, will close two roads on either side of the bridge until an expected completion date of Friday, Jan. 31 , 2016. Portions of Sheppard Mill Road and Delta Church Road will be closed as a result of the construction.
NCDOT spokesman Miracle King said the contract for the project, which will completely replace the existing bridge, had been awarded to Apple Tuck and Associates for a bid of $921,466.05
“Built in 1959, the existing bridge had reached the end of its life cycle and needed to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands” said King. “The new bridge will accommodate all traffic, including trucks and emergency vehicles, as it will not be subject to the load restrictions of the current bridge.”
Motorists will use Moir Farm Road, Steele Road and Tom Shelton Road to detour around the closure.
