Core drilling starts in Walnut Cove

The drill will use a diamond-tipped bit to collect core samples.

Once core samples start coming out of the drilled hole, they will be archived in these white boxes.

Employees of Patterson Exploration Services were busy getting the drill set up to obtain core samples Monday afternoon. The core samples will be used to determine the potential for fracking operations in the area.

Patterson Exploration Services began core sample drilling in Walnut Cove Monday afternoon, five days earlier than originally planned.

Chief Geologist Russ Patterson said the change in start date was a result of his company completing other core sample drilling sooner than expected, and noted that by moving the start date up it would give his company more wiggle room if they ran into any problems during the drilling process.

He said the drilling is expected to take between 10 and 14 days. Drilling operations will run from from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. everyday, including weekend days, according to Patterson.
