The Walnut Cove Board of Commissioners unanimously accepted the resignation of former Commissioner Natalie Smiley Tuesday night.
Commissioner Sharon Conaway noted that Smiley had resigned from the board because she had moved out of the town limits and Stokes County.
Conaway added that the move had been expected and the board had decided it would be better for for the board to figure out how to fill the seat after the November municipal election rather than try to add the vacant seat to the ballot at the last minute.
“After checking with the Board of Elections, we discovered that we would have had to have a special election and that anyone who had signed up to run for the two open seats would not be able to file for this additional vacant seat,” she explained. “We agreed that we did not think that was the best way to address it and we will let the board address it after the elections.”
Commissioner Kim Lewis added that several board members had discussed the idea of appointing which ever candidate came in third in the November elections to fill the seat.
“That was just a discussion and there is no decision right now,” she said.
