Heather Pendleton has been named as the new Piney Grove Middle School, following a decision by the Stokes County School Board on Jan. 11.
Pendleton will be replacing Steven Hall, who left the district to accept an elementary principalship with Alleghany County Schools.
Pendleton is no stranger to Piney Grove, having served there previously as assistant principal from 2007 until 2009.
Pendleton served as assistant principal at Mount Olive Elementary from 2009 until 2011, before being named principal at Germanton Elementary in 2012. Pendleton’s teaching career included special education and business at Patrick County High in Stuart, Va., and Gentry Middle School in Surry County.
Pendleton said she is excited about returning to Piney Grove and working alongside the staff to bring the school out of a low-performing status, noting she knows the staff, students, parents and Central Office staff are already working hard this year.
She said her plan is to provide leadership that advocates for staff and students to ensure student achievement and growth. Pendleton believes in the staff and students and knows that with continued hard work, it can be accomplished. She looks forward to partnering with parents and the community to continue the great reputation that has long been associated with Piney Grove Middle School.
Pendleton earned her bachelor’s in teaching from James Madison University and her Master’s in Administration from the University of Virginia.
Pendleton and her husband Ryan have two teenage daughters who are active in sports and reside in nearby Patrick County.
Executive Director of Human Resources and Public Information Melisa Jessup noted the district will advertise for the principal position at Germanton Elementary over the next two weeks and anticipates naming Pendleton’s replacement in early February. Gerald Jones, retired elementary principal, will serve as interim principal until the principal is named. Jones has served previously as interim principal at Germanton in the past.
