Walnut Cove will again host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day march on Monday, Jan, 18, starting at noon.
The march, sponsored by the Christian Awareness Program, gives local residents a chance to reflect on the civil rights movement.
Charles Welch, who is helping to organize the event, said participants in the march should meet at the Rising Star Baptist Church by 11:15 a.m.
“We will have three to four buses there that will bus them down to the Cove Mart for the start of the march,” he said. “The buses will follow them back up in case anybody needs a ride back up.”
He said once marchers return to Rising Star Baptist Church, there will be a program remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“We will have kids come out and read their paragraphs on the topic of ‘Following the Right Leadership,’” said Welch. “We will have some songs from the choir and then we will hear from our guest speaker, Mia Franklin, from Rock Hill Baptist Church.”
Welch said Franklin was a freshman at Winston-Salem State University and has been involved in the CAP program since she was a young girl.
“We try to pick kids that have been brought up in the program and stand out in the community,” he said.
