A man was killed and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a motorcycle crash Sunday evening in Kernersville, police said.

Sammy Joe Long, 41, of Pilot Mountain lost control of the motorcycle on a curve on U.S. Route 421 north near mile marker 16 and crashed into a guardrail in the median around 5 p.m., according to the Kernersville Police Department.

Long and Saige Caroline Leftwich, 22, of King were thrown from the motorcycle.

Long died at the scene. Leftwich was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Speed may have been a factor, police said.

A traffic reconstruction team is investigating the cause of the crash.

U.S. Route 421 north was closed for several hours, but was reopened around 8:30 p.m.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police.
