King American Legion Post 290 announced this week that the post will sponsor six rising high school senior boys from Stokes and Surry Counties to the 77th Session of The American Legion Tar Heel Boys’ State during the week of June 19-25 to be held at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC.
Tar Heel Boys’ State, formed in 1938, is sponsored by the American Legion Department of North Carolina. The Legion believes that Boys’ State teaches that preservation of our form of government depends on intelligent, informed and loyal citizens. By teaching the youth of our state and nation to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations.
Tar Heel Boys’ State is an intense leadership workshop concentrating on North Carolina state and local government and politics. Some 350 rising high school junior boys representing all geographic areas of North Carolina participate annually in the program.
