Last week seniors from West Stokes High School took time to revisit the elementary schools they started in, offering inspiration for younger students and getting a chance to thank some of their very first teachers before graduating.

The event was organized by West Stokes High School Principal Kevin Spainhour after his wife showed him a similar event on social media.

“I reached out to the elementary principals and they were very cooperative and excited about it,” said Spainhour.

On Wednesday, seniors dressed in full graduation attire loaded buses to travel to each of the high school’s feeder schools, Pinnacle, King, Mount Olive and Poplar Springs, where they were greeted with hallways filled with younger kids offering their congratulations to the soon-to-be graduates.

“We wanted to do it so that our younger kids could see what they were working towards,” said Spainhour. “But in the end it has been such a great experience for our kids to come back and see their old teachers and reminisce and reflect on the journey they had. It has just been a really great experience.

“This class has done some amazing things,” he added. “They are a great group of kids and right now they have been offered over $2.8 million in scholarships.”

Mount Olive Elementary School Principal Robin Layman said the experience had been a good one for the younger students as well.

“As early as preschool and kindergarten we start to talk to the kids about their goals and we want them to know, even at that early age, about the importance of college and life-long learning,” she said. “For them to get to see students who walked these very halls and have gotten to that graduation point and accomplished that goal is very important. These are excellent role models for them. This will probably become a tradition. It definitely compliments what we try to instill in them every day.”
