Concerns over tree cutting

Residents in the Walnut Cove area are upset over the recent Duke Power right of way management which has resulted in the trimming of trees in various areas.

“I am very concerned about what is happening with our trees,” said Christine Boles. “I almost wish they would just cut them down. They are leaving large massive limbs hanging out in the road. They are cutting one complete side of the tree which is going to create a weight problem.”

She questioned what would happen in a strong storm to trees that were heavily weighted on one side.

“These trees are going to split because of the weight issue,” she said. “If we have a major storm Stokesburg Road will probably be closed. If someone’s house caught on fire in a story how are the fire trucks going to be able to get through?”

Town Manager Monty Stevens said Duke had offered to hold a community meeting to explain the cutting methods and answer any concerns from the community.

“Jimmy Flythe said he would be more than happy to come talk about the program,” said Stevens.

The Board of Commissioners agreed that would be a good idea and instructed Stevens to help get a meeting set up. No date for the meeting had been set at press time.
