Ararat tremors confirmed as earthquake

After much speculation, the tremor felt in east-central part of Surry County Sunday was confirmed as a mild earthquake.

Some Surry County residents, in the area between Ararat and Pilot Mountain, called 911 over a loud boom and ground shaking on Sunday afternoon.

State geology officials confirmed Monday that it was a 2.2-magnitude earthquake around 3:20 p.m.

There were no reports of injuries or damage.

Surry County emergency officials said they received numerous calls of the ground shaking from a roughly four-mile radius around Ararat. Some callers reported they thought they heard some type of explosion, emergency officials said.

This earthquake was nothing compared to a massive quake that hit Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua Tuesday morning. That one, at 6:41 a.m. local time, registered a 7.0. Its depth was measured at nearly 33 miles beneath the remote mountainous region of the island.
