Miss Cindy’s Preschool Storytime starts at the Walnut Cove Library

Miss Cindy’s Preschool story hour is back at the Walnut Cove Public Library. If you are the parent, grandparent, or caretaker of a child who is birth to age five then the library is the place for you and your children. Every Monday at 10 a.m. Assistant Librarian Cindy Lawson hosts a free story hour that includes a wealth of educational activities for the youngest patrons. Preschool programs start Sept. 12 and will be held at 10 a.m. every Mon. through May 15.

It’s a fun-filled hour that provides children with an opportunity to learn new words, be exposed to new concepts, and interact with new friends in a group experience. Storytime exposes children to a wide range of library materials and resources, as well as encourages the development of a lifelong love of books and reading. The storytime is thematic based and includes Miss Cindy reading to the children, interactive activities on the Smartboard, educational videos, singing and dancing. Even the youngest of children can clap along with the music!

Storytime plays an important role in introducing children of all ages to the magic of books. Parents and caregivers should begin reading to children when they are very small, even in the earliest stages of life before they can walk and talk. Babies and toddlers enjoy books with bright pictures and simple text. Board books that babies can manipulate themselves (and chew on) are great choices. While babies cannot understand the intricacies of the language, they do enjoy the rhythm of the words.

No matter how hard parents try, it is almost impossible to have all the books children need or will want to read in a home library. That is where public libraries play such an important role in our children’s development. Public libraries are the storehouses of knowledge for many parents and child care providers. Books on almost every subject can be found. Is your preschooler in the early stages of learning their ABC’s or does your older child want to know the type of the snake they saw in the back yard? The answer is in the public library.

Please contact the Walnut Cove Public Library for more information about services including Miss Cindy’s Preschool Storytime at 336-591-7496 or visit their website at www.nwrl.org. Registration is not required for the preschoolers and one of the best things about the story hour is it is free.
