Senior Winners at Stokes Fair


Alan and Kay Sorrell were blue ribbon winners at the Stokes County Fair Senior Citizens Fun Festival held at the King Senior Center.

Stokes County Agricultural Fair Manager, Don Adams welcomed the group of seniors to the Stokes County Fair Senior Citizens’ Fun Festival held on Friday, Sept. 16 at the King Senior Center. He opened the event in prayer. The Piedmont Cheering Hearts from The Living Well in Rural Hall preformed cheers to get the excitement going, ending with Give me a R, an O, a W, a D, a Y. Let’s get ROWDY!

The judges came in from around the county which included Bonnie Sorrels, retired, Amy Wilhelm, Priddy Manor, and Selene Teague, Mountain Valley Hospice. The judges were tasked with the difficult decision of choosing winners, when everyone did so well, especially the dancers.

Tom Southern emceed the event and there were fifteen different competitions for individuals and one for senior citizens clubs. Cranford Creek Bluegrass Band performed music for the Buck Dancing Contest, as well dance songs between the contests. They closed their performance with “Amazing Grace”.

Lunch of pizza and soft drinks was provided by the American Legion. Many of the seniors present went to the fairgrounds to see exhibits and watch McNally’s Pig Racing.

Couple Most Recently Married Ken and Alice Sorrels and Doug and Jewell Bowman, Shortest Lady Rhonda Ross and Sarah Browder, Tallest Man Ted Nelson and Jim Carlin, Best Man Buck Dancer Tony Bowman, Best Woman Buck Dancer Barbara Fain and Almeta Bowen, Club with Most Members Present Sauratown Get Together (King) and Rainbow Club (Walnut Cove).
