Approximately 50 people attended the “Our Communities Initiative Group” meeting held Monday, September 21, at the Francisco Community Building. A delicious pasta supper prepared by the members was enjoyed by everyone. After the meal, the discussion began concerning the application for a nonprofit foundation to serve the northwest Stokes area. Kendall Harden, a resident of Francisco, presented a slideshow showing some of the positive aspects of obtaining the nonprofit foundation status. Deborah Warren, consultant for the NC Rural Center located in Raleigh, presided over the discussions that followed. Deborah is familiar with the problems rural areas have been faced with in these tough economic times. She has worked with other NC counties that have encountered the challenges such as the school closure that our area now faces. The nonprofit status would allow the communities in the northwestern area of our county to apply for funding for major projects, something that is so desperately needed at this time. The group unanimously voted in favor of applying for nonprofit foundation status. A new chapter in our community begins!
