Mitchell’s Nursery and Greenhouse -Has pretty flowering 10” hanging baskets on sale for $12.50. They are perfect to hang or to put in a planter for instant color. They can also be planted in the ground. We planted one on each side of our sign for instant color also. Begonias and lantana along with other plants are still available in individual pots for summer color, along with begonias and vinca in 6 packs. We also have a late crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash in 4 pack.
Three grandchildren of Danny Ray and Barbara Tucker spent last week with them and attended Vacation Bible School at Mount Olive Baptist Church. They were Jaxson Farrar, Jordan Bracken and Chase Bracken. Little Johnny Farrar spent several days up here too. Gabriell Southern and Briony Scott spent the week with their grandparents and attended VBS.. Bryant Southern has been spending several weeks up here with his Southern grandparents and went back home in Statesville to attend driver’s training classes. Bryant is spending this week his grandmother, Betty Tucker. On Friday night, those attending the VBS Celebration were Christy and Chris Bracken of Midway, Steve, Johnny, and Danica Farrar of Greensboro; Bridgett and Bryant Southern of Statesville; and Britney, Asher, and Brian Scott of King.

LUCILLE’S CHOCOLATE PIE
1 cup granulated sugar
3 Tbsp. cocoa
3 Tbsp. flour
Dash of salt
1 ¾ cups milk
2 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
Sift together sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt. Pour milk into a medium saucepan, add egg yolks and stir until blended. Slowly add dry ingredients, stirring to form smooth mixture. Cook over medium high heat
until thick, remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour into a baked 9-inch pie shell. Top with the following meringue.
2 egg whites
¼ cup granulated sugar
Beat egg whites until soft peaks are formed; slowly add sugar and beat until stiff. Spread on top of pie and bake at 350 degrees until golden brown.
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup pecans, toasted
2 cups blueberries
Mix the sugar, eggs and oil. Before adding the blueberries and pecans, take some of the flour and coat them. Then add the rest of the flour, pecans and blueberries to the sugar mixture. Put into a greased 9 x 13 inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
Roasted Sweet Potatoes
3 Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into bite size cubes 2 tsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter… 1 tbsp of brown sugar (organic) 1 tsp of ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp of ground nutmeg Pinch of ground ginger Sea salt, to taste
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a small baking dish with cooking spray. Peel and dice the sweet potatoes into bite size cubes and place in the baking dish. Melt butter in the microwave and pour over the potatoes along with the olive oil, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt. Add more sugar or cinnamon if desired. Toss to coat evenly. Bake in the oven for 60 minutes. Stir the sweet potatoes once or twice during roasting.
SWEET HAWAIIAN CROCK-POT CHICKEN—EASY AND YUMMMY!!
2 lb. Chicken tenderloin chunks 1 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup soy sauce
Combine all together, cook on low in Crock-pot 6-8 hours…that’s it! Done! Serve with brown rice and you have a complete, easy meal!!
BUTTER PECAN CAKE
Betty Crocker Butter Pecan Mix
Betty Cocker Cocoanut Pecan Icing
½ cup oil
1 cup water
¼ cup chopped pecans
Mix everything well except pecans. Grease cake pan and coat with powder sugar. Put chopped pecans in bottom of pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
