South Stokes football program held its annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage Friday night and afterwards introduced the players and coaches to an excited group of Saura fans.

“I’ve got a great coaching staff,” said head coach Jonathan Frasher. “I couldn’t ask to come to work with a better group of men every day. You’re lucky to have them coaching your kids.”

Offensive coordinator Brian Mabe introduced this seasons quarterbacks Jonah Moorefield, Ozzy Polifka and Josh Patane.

“This is Jonah’s first year playing football with us and he’s doing a great job. He’s working hard and has a great attitude,” Mabe said. “Some of you may recognize Ozzy from playing defensive line, fullback and quarterback. He’s done a little bit of everything for us and he had a touchdown pass tonight.”

Mabe said Patane’s been utilized in a number of positions and steps up wherever they need him.

“These guys are in charge and I’ve challenged them to be positive all year long and hopefully they’ll continue to do that,” he said.

Coach Shane Worth and Tyler Hawks have worked alongside defensive backs and wide receivers Matthew Hayden, Dre Bonner, Armando Rodriguez, Cody Hobert, and Tre Haliburton.

“They’re doing a great job. I’m looking forward to seeing some great things,” Worth said.

Offensive line coach Vic Tuttle and defensive coach Kyle Woods introduced Sterling Bennett, Lee Everett, Jacob Smith, Hunter Johnson, Patrick Branch, and Robbie Hennelly.

“You’re the guys in the trenches that are going to keep those guys safe back there this year,” Tuttle said.

Helping South with their fullbacks this season is former Saura and state champion wrestler Jordan Ford.

“He has a hard work ethic, impeccable character and is really good to be around your kids,” Frasher said.

Ford introduced Mason Dutton, Hunter Mikels, and Matt Patane.

Coach Chad Amos introduced running backs Tanner Moore, Dre Bonner, Josh Patane, Michal Phillips, Lazion Holland, and Keelan Goodwin.

This Saturday South Stokes hosts their annual Sauras Jamboree beginning at 10 a.m. JV scrimmages will be held on the baseball field and varsity on the football field. The Sauras kick off their first game of the season at East Wilkes Friday, August 21 at 7:30.
