North Stokes three-game win streak snapped on the road in a 27-17 matchup against East Wilkes on Friday.
“We came out flat and got ourselves into a 21-0 hole,” said Vikings coach Mitch Reeves. “We played much better in the second half, but just had too much of a hole to dig out of.”
Senior Dalton Sawyers led with 10 tackles. Chase Vaden had two interceptions, and Tevin Carter forced two fumbles. Quarterback Jackson Moorefield completed 10 of 20 for 115 yards. The Vikings defense forced seven turnovers.
Josh Manuel returned a fumble for a touchdown just before halftime giving North momentum moving into the third quarter.
Senior Blake Williams added to the scoreboard with an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth and Andrew Lankford made a 41-yard field goal.
“We had three turnovers which is unlike us, so we definitely have to address ball security this week. The guys are motivated to get back on a winning streak. We are obviously disappointed, but the mistakes we made are all correctable and we’ll move forward.”
North Stokes (3-1) hosts Patrick County (1-2) in a non-conference game this Friday beginning at 7:30.
Despite a disappointing 24-14 loss to Alleghany on the road Friday night, South’s program is seeing results. Sophomore Cole Rothrock played his first full game finishing with a touchdown run and a 2-point conversion.
“I thought he played very well for us,” said coach Jonathan Frasher. “Obviously we don’t want to lose, but the fact is we’re getting better and improving each week. I thought our kids fought hard, all four quarters.”
On defense, Mason Dutton had 14 tackles and forced a fumble. Matt Hayden had 11 tackles and three passes defended. Tanner Moore contributed 12 tackles and caused a fumble.
Senior Keelan Goodwin added a touchdown in the third quarter and Jonah Moorefield finished with 116 yards receiving.
Moving into Friday’s game Frasher said his team has to quit turning the ball over.
“It kills us and it takes momentum. Of the three turnovers we had, two of them they converted to their only offensive scores,” he said. “But we’re getting better and we’re excited about that.”
South Stokes (0-4) hosts Bishop McGuinness (1-3) in a non-conference game Friday night at 7:30.
