West Stokes Lady Wildcats recognized their three seniors in the last game of the regular season against Surry Central on Thursday.
Mariah Maynard, Hannah Delcamp, and Lexie Hartle provided leadership and direction this season, according to coach Jordan Stevens.
“Hannah (Delcamp) has given us an offense. She divides the ball up across the net and gives us opportunities,” Stevens said.
Hartle began high school at West Stokes, then transferred to Reagan, and has since made her way back.
“She definitely provided us that spark and she’s the extra hitter that we were looking for last year.”
This season Maynard was asked to change positions on the court, and without hesitation jumped into the new role.
“Mariah’s been a key player ever since she started volleyball,” Stevens said. “Without her I don’t know where we would be as far as the middle position. She’s been the happy-go-lucky team member that a lot of times we’ve needed this season.”
On Thursday, West took the lead in the first set against Surry Central and won 25-15. The Golden Eagles came back to sweep the next three, 27-25, 25-23, 25-6.
“I think they came out and played,” Stevens said. “I’ve been telling them they can play with anybody as long as they believe it.”
The Lady Wildcats finished their regular season 10-14 and 2-8 in the 2A Western Piedmont Conference.
“We have a young team, which causes some setbacks at times. When you have six sophomores on the floor for the majority of the game, mentally there’s a hump they have to get over,” Stevens said. “It’s exciting for next year. They all play club ball together so they’re only going to get better as a team.”
Against Surry Central Delcamp finished with 4 kills, 1 block, 32 assists, and 10 digs.
Hartle had 13 kills, 1 block, and 5 digs. Maynard added 2 kills 1 block, and 1 dig.
