Lady Vikings end season at state playoffs

The Lady Vikings ended their season on Saturday in the first round of the state playoffs in a hard-fought 2-3 loss to Hayesville (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-17).

“Our girls played an amazing game against a very strong Smokey Mountain Conference team. Hayesville finished second in their conference with an 11-1 record and are currently 21-3 overall in their season,” said head coach Christine Condon.

The coach said Chandley Garner and Lauren Charleville proved to be a strong force at the net. The duo communicated well and were key in going five sets with a solid Hayesville team. Garner added 23 kills, three aces, one block, 38 digs, and nine serve receives while senior Charleville finished with 20 kills, two aces, two blocks, and 11 digs.

Megan Condon continued her dominance in running the offense. The senior set a new school single match record of 56 assists and a new season record of 88 aces. She also had nine kills, one block, and 20 digs.

“She provided great leadership in communicating with her hitters to place the ball in weak spots in Hayesville’s defense. She put several missed passes into play that kept us alive,” the coach said.

Condon credited senior Tana Frye with moving the back line into position for coverage and talking to each of her defenders with leadership. Frye finished her last game as a senior with 38 digs and 37 serve receives.

Emma Mabe went 16 for 16 in serving and Natalie Dodson 17 for 18 with one ace.

“They are very dependable and I never worry about them having the ball in their hands on the serve,” Condon said.

“Savannah Fulp (two kills, six digs) and Lora Wood (five kills, three serve receives) did a great job of providing defense on the net. They caught the ball off the block and picked up tips from the outside, which is vital,” Condon said.

Carson Watkins finished with seven kills, 15 digs, and 23 serve receives and Ashley Smith 10 digs, and 18 serve receives.

“We had some misses on digs, but the girls did a great job and left everything they had on the floor Saturday,” Condon said. “They played a solid overall game. We had girls on the bench watching for holes on Hayesville’s floor and talked to their teammates during timeouts and between sets to help them out. This is what a team is all about. Everyone participates whether playing or on the bench.”

After a disappointing loss on Saturday, Condon said she was encouraged by compliments she received from Hayesville coach, athletic director, and principal.

“It wasn’t just on their playing ability, but also their composure on the court, their togetherness as a team, and their sportsmanship. These girls played their hearts out for each other. I could not be prouder of them,” she said.
