The Lady Sauras defeated North Stokes for the second time this season on Dec. 22. North led in the first quarter 13-3, but South managed to tie the game by halftime 22-22.
“We got off to a horrific start,” said South coach Mitch Adams. “We got down and just couldn’t make a shot. I thought we were pressing too much and nothing was smooth.”
The Lady Vikings relied heavily on senior Lauren Charleville who raked in 15 points, nine in the first quarter. North struggled to score in the third only putting three points on the board.
“Towards the end it became a close game,” Adams said. “Our shots started going down and our intensity stepped up on defense. The biggest thing that helped us was our free throws.”
As a team the Lady Sauras went 20 for 34 from the line. Senior Haleigh Yontz was nine for 10.
“It made the difference in the game,” Adams said.
Yontz led the Lady Sauras with 12 points, Kenya Jones 10, Ashley James and Mallory Tedder added 5 each, Ashlyn Hawkins and Antoinette France 3, and Maggie Joyce 2.
Charleville led the Lady Vikings with 15 points, Katie McHone 8, Tori Mabe and Sarah McBride 4, Natalie Dodson 2, and Megan Condon 1.
The Lady Sauras (8-6) kick off their conference season on Tuesday, Jan. 5 in a home game against Forbush (7-3). North Stokes (1-11, 0-3) travels to Winston Salem Prep (8-2) for a conference matchup on Friday.
