It was a night of personal bests set by West Stokes swimmers on Thursday.

Hunter Buffington became the Wildcats first swimmer to break a minute in the 100 freestyle with a time of 59.5. Omnie Grabs dropped time in both of his events, placing first in the 500 freestyle (6:43.1) and the 200 IM (2:43.0). The men’s 400 freestyle relay team made up of Mike Madigan, Grabs, Hunter Buffington, and Jacob Johnson swam a 4:02.2 to meet regional qualification time.

“We continue to see times dropping across the board with many of our new swimmers like Abby Bryant, Cameron Heath, Kruti Patel, Shannon Webb dropping over 10 seconds in their events from the beginning of the year,” said assistant coach Pat Erickson.

In a conference matchup West men won 57-31 over North Surry and 57-24 to Forbush.

West Stokes ladies defeated North Surry 69-23, but came in second to Forbush 57-24.

Three of the Lady Wildcats finished with personal bests: Laura Pulliam in the 50 freestyle (28.58), Bethany Memola in the 100 freestyle (1:07:37) and Anna McGhee in the 100 backstroke, a personal best for the year by seven seconds (1:22.72).

On Friday the swim team competed in the North Davidson Invitational at Winston Salem State University.

“The swimmers did great. There were seven teams and many of them were 3A/4A. We had swimmers place in the top 10 of events. It was a great experience for them to see different levels of swimmers and swim in a meet with so many state qualifiers,” Erickson said.

Wests’ men 200 yard freestyle relay made up of Noah Waege, Grabs, Buffington, and Johnson swam a new best of 1:40.90, qualifying for regionals.

“We had numerous boys drop time in the 50 freestyle and Jacob Johnson dropped almost six seconds to swim a new PR in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.3. Nathan Buffington set a new PR in the 100 backstroke by dropping 10 seconds,” Erickson added.

For the ladies, Breanna Glenney (200 freestyle) and Dana Erickson (500 freestyle) both dropped over 10 seconds in their events and established new personal bests.

Wests’ swim team travels to WSSU to compete against Glenn on Friday, Jan. 15 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
