The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released its second draft of realignment for the 2017-2021 school years on Friday, and there were no changes for the four local high schools. For the second consecutive draft, the conferences involving Stokes and Surry County schools are as follows:

1A Conference C (currently the Northwest Conference): Bishop McGuinness, East Surry, Mount Airy, North Stokes, South Stokes and Winston-Salem Preparatory. 2A Conference D (currently the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference): Atkins, Carver, Forbush, North Surry, Surry Central, Walkertown and West Stokes.

The uphill battle now becomes even steeper for the local athletic directors. Their written proposal, submitted on Jan. 9, was essentially denied by the NCHSAA with this second edition of realignment. In the proposal, schools from Surry County and Stokes County teamed up and proposed a split 1A/2A conference comprised of East Surry, Mount Airy, North Stokes, North Surry, South Stokes, Surry Central and West Stokes.

The next step for local schools is for athletic directors and principals to go to Lincolnton on Feb. 10 for a regional meeting to voice their concerns.

The NCHSAA realignment would put South and North Stokes in the same conference along with Bishop McGuinness, East Surry, Mount Airy, and Winston-Salem Preparatory.
