Chestnut Grove wrestlers finished their season strong with a 12-2 record and a Foothills Middle School Co-Conference title alongside Piney Grove and Pilot Mountain.
“This is the fourth straight year we’ve won or split the conference title,” said coach Jason Sammons.
In the conference tournament Jimmy Daughtery (220) and Demetry Sandlin (195) won their weight classes while Naz Little finished second in the 126-pound weight class.
“Naz was a true joy to watch wrestle because he had a special fight in him that carried him to a ton of wins. After coaching him for two years, I’ll miss the grit and determination he has,” the coach said.
Sammons has been pleased with the development of their seventh graders and believes it will continue to be a competitive class to build on. Throughout the season the coach has stressed to his team the importance of fostering a strong work ethic.
“The number one thing I want our kids to take out of our program is that you have to work hard to earn the things you want in wrestling and in life. Things will never be given to you so you have to work to earn it,” he said.
Sammons wishes his athletes success, especially those transitioning to the high school level.
“Planning for the future we’re going to attend some of the West Stokes wrestling matches and they come and watch some of ours. This will hopefully get kids excited to wrestle in high school,” the coach said. “Coach Watkins is doing some off-season workouts and developing an AAU program. It’s desperately needed in this district. Hopefully we can sit down and create a plan of action. We also have coaches Luke and Dan Grabeman doing a spring weight lifting program that many of the kids work hard in during the spring.”
