Chestnut Grove boys’ basketball teams continue to dominate at first place in the Foothills Middle School Conference. Their ‘A’ team is currently undefeated at 11-0 and ‘B’ team is 9-1.
Coach Jarryd Moxley believes their record reflects an improvement in communication and free throw shooting.
“We want the teams to shoot 70 percent from the free throw line. The first two games of the season they shot 43. In the last two games they’ve shot 76 percent,” he said.
Moxley also attributes the success to the boys playing as a team.
“They’re like a family and I think that’s one of the most important factors for any sports team,” he said.
As the conference season winds down the coach hopes his players continue to be patient.
“Sometimes we rush into things when we just need to slow down and control the game. I do think that’s improved since the first of the year, but still needs some work,” he said.
Against Piney Grove, on team ‘A’ Isaac Spainhour led with 23 points. Spainhour is averaging 16 points per game along with teammate Luke Mickey with eight, Chris Brown seven, and Kelin Parsons six.
Josh Hartle, on the ‘B’ team had a season high of 16 points against Mount Airy Middle in a hard fought win.
“Going into the game both teams had one loss and the winner would leave as the first place team in the conference. Josh (Hartle) helped lead us to a 36-31 win,” Moxley said. “As a coach, of course I want us to win every game we play. But, in the long run it doesn’t matter if we win them all or if we lose them all. I just hope that I’m setting a good example for the players to be able to look back on and say that they not only became a better basketball player, but that they became a better person and had fun doing it!”
