Sauras win on senior night

South Stokes wrestlers defeated Carver 42-19 to take a big win on the Sauras senior night.

In the 195-weight class Samantha Miller won by forfeit, along with Lowell Shotten (106), Manuel Espino (113), Alvin Reynolds (126), Cooper Ross (132) Karmyn Rodriguez (145). Ryan Rice pinned his opponent in the 120-pound weight class.

On Saturday, South came in fifth place at the Western Piedmont Conference tournament. Kevin Fischer earned a conference title in the 138-pound weight class along with Steven Fatz at 145.

Fischer defeated North Surry’s Kobe Slate. The senior was behind 5-1 early in the match but came back to win 8-6.

As a freshman, Fatz squared off with Danny Mata, an opponent he’d lost to earlier this season. In the third period the two were tied 7-7. In overtime Fatz got the first takedown to earn two points and win the match.

Espino (113) finished in second and Reynolds (126) came in third.

Ross (138) went 2-1 defeating Dakota Hutchens of Forbush by pin to take third place.

Shotton (106) finished fourth. Ryan Rice (120) went 2-2 with wins from Surry Central and Carver.

South Stokes will host 22 schools for the individual regionals on Feb. 12 and 13. The top four wrestlers in each weight class at regionals will move on to the NCHSAA state tournament in Greensboro the following weekend.
