Holder reminisces of 1947 win

Eugene Holder is the last surviving member of the old King High School Team that won the 1947 Journal & Sentential Basketball tournament.

Two years ago West Stokes honored the 1947 King High School basketball team for their victory in the Journal and Sentinel Northwest North Carolina basketball tournament, the biggest in the state at the time. Eugene Holder, who currently lives in California, couldn’t make the ceremony but recently connected with West Stokes basketball coach Dan Spainhour.

The rest of the 1947 team coached by Odell Neal was Ralph Patterson, Keith Fowler, Roy Watts, Robert Covington, David Thomas, Wayne Jones, Paul Johnson, Ed Lankford and George Kirby.
