North Stokes boys and girls won their first outdoor track meet of the season pulling in more points than North and East Wilkes.
“I felt like our girls team did very well. Most of our veteran runners picked up where they left off at the end of last year’s track season. Many ran, threw, or jumped their best from last season or set new PRs,” said Lady Vikings coach Rodney King.
Junior Emma Frye raked in 20 points alone with first place finishes in the long jump, triple jump, 300 and 100 meter hurdles.
“She did very well,” King said.
Megan Condon won the high jump event, discus throw and finished second place in shot put.
In the 800 meter run, Brandy Bolens finished first and Rachel Martin second.
Freshman Lauren Collins won the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:10.17.
On the pole vault Hailey Sheppard came in first, Autumn Knight second, and Bailey Bollman third.
“All of our girls have the potential to do well and are working really hard in practice to reach our team goals,” King said. “Our new people to the sport showed us that they are going to help us tremendously in areas we thought we were going to be weak.”
The coach is looking to his upperclassmen to be leaders, excel in their events, and encourage one another to push beyond what they believe are their limits.
“As with any season we want to improve our times and distances with each meet, and to qualify as many athletes to the regional and state meet as we can. Doing that will help us to achieve our goals at the regional and state level,” King said.
On the boy’s side, in the 200 meter dash, Austin Pruitt finished first and freshman Zach Chesnet fourth. Pruitt went on to win the 400 and the high jump and Chesnet placed second in the long jump.
Freshman Nicholas Delp won the 800 meter.
Dawson Durham won the 1600 meter run and Jacob McGee placed second.
Laith Nickell took top honors on the pole vault and long jump. Mark Tucker placed second in pole vault, and Daniel Brown third.
Ross Lucia won the shot put event along with discus throw.
