North Stokes Lady Vikings clinched their second conference win of the season on Wednesday defeating Atkins 3-1.

“Overall, the girls played well. We were able to create a few scoring opportunities early on and capitalized on two chances before the half,” said North’s coach Michael Richardson.

The Lady Vikings lit up the scoreboard when Amelia Boles took control of a loose ball in the box, and lobbed it in the corner of the net.

On the second goal, a well-placed through ball left Kailyn Moorefield on a breakaway resulting in a precise low shot into the corner.

Atkins picked up their only goal in the second half.

“We’ve struggled when we get down early in games, but we stayed positive in the second half even when Atkins got a goal. We’re more organized as of late, and continue to pick up on little things here and there that can be the difference maker in games,” Richardson said.

The coach is pleased with the direction the team is heading.

As a young program, only in its third season, North’s girls finished with five wins in 2014 and seven in 2015. In the Northwest 1A Conference, Bishop McGuiness is leading undefeated and the Lady Vikings are tied for second with East Surry and Mount Airy.

“There’s still a lot to work on,” Richardson said. “Our final ball into the box has to be better, to give us better looks at goal. Many of our girls are still learning the game and are making some good strides.”

North earned their first conference win against Walkertown in a 6-0 match on March 22.

“We were definitely the better team and it finally showed in the score. It was a good confidence builder for our team moving forward,” the coach said.

Goalie Meghan Mabe kept a clean sheet and had several good saves.

“She’s done well for us this year.”

Moorefield added two goals and Brittany Lajeunesse, Kaitlyn “Red” Johnson, Meghan McQuinn, and McKenzie Tilley each had a goal.

The Lady Vikings (4-10, 2-1) travel to North Surry (3-6-2, 0-1) on Thursday for a conference matchup beginning at 4:30.
