“The team has played well this season,” said Vikings golf coach Wayne Fulp. “We’ve improved several strokes over our performance last season.”
On Monday, Mount Airy clinched the Northwest 1A Conference title at Cross Creek Country Club earning an automatic bid to regionals along with Bishop McGuiness and East Surry. North Stokes finished in fourth place edging out Atkins and Walkertown.
“Our biggest competition this year has been with Walkertown,” Fulp said. “Our players are evenly matched but we still have a several stroke lead over them.”
North’s team this season is made up of Tyler Smoot, Alan Bullins, Justin Long, Alex Rodriguez and team leader Weston Fulp.
“He worked hard over the break to get better and it showed this year. He’s improved his accuracy and distance quite a lot since last year,” the coach said.
At Winston Lake on April 13, North Stokes finished in fourth but came in 12 strokes under their yearly average.
“Our players have improved quite a bit this season with their ball striking, short game, and course management as well,” Fulp said. “The biggest thing I want my players to take from this season is a respect for the game of golf and their fellow competitors. Golf teaches life lessons as it is built on honor and courtesy. I want them to have fun, enjoy the game, and realize golf is a game they can play the rest of their lives.”
The top three schools have qualified as teams to compete in the 1A Midwest Regional at Elkin’s Cedarbrook Country Club on May 3. Four of the best golfers not on the top three teams will also be invited to compete. Although those four haven’t been chosen Fulp believes North will be represented.
