In spite of a tough draw and a matchup facing defending state champions East Rowan in the first round the North Stokes 10U All-Star team battled their way through their bracket and defeated a strong Surry team 17-7 making Vikings history by going further than any team since joining the Babe Ruth / Cal Ripken Little League and finished one win away from advancing to state.
“After the tough task of four games in four days and nearly 15 hours of travel they simply just ran out of gas,” said coach Matt Greer.
He and Brock Wood have coached for the past five years at Lawsonville, Nancy Reynolds, and previous all-star teams.
Greer said this team bought into what they were coaching and each player individually accepted their roles on the team and excelled.
“That’s what probably made them the best Viking team ever,” Greer said. “Only three of them really knew how big the win was until after the game when we told them how proud we were. They all lit up like Christmas lights and had the biggest smiles on their faces. It made all of our time, work, and dedication that we put into it for five years’ worth it.”
