South Stokes

South Stokes only took eight boys to the regionals meet held at Monroe High School on Friday and still managed to secure a second place finish. Senior Keelan Goodwin won the 110 hurdles and long jump while finishing second in the triple jump.

Matt Mudd finished third in the 400 meter and fourth in the long jump.

Kenneth Thomas finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and Matt Patane came in second in the discus.

“They’ve put in a tremendous effort all year and to get the recognition at the end was very special for them,” said coach Kyle Woods. “Keelan, Matt and Kenneth work together every day and they push each other past their limits. Iron sharpens iron and that’s the case with these special athletes.”

For the ladies, Sydney Combs won the high jump to secure her spot at states on Saturday at the NCHSAA Championship Meet at North Carolina A&T State University’s Belk Track.

Woods said the athletes will continue to fine tune their events this week.

“We’ve put in the work all year and at this point we’re just trying to make sure they’re rested and primed to be at their absolute best.”

West Stokes

Senior Kaitlyn Stone won the 3200 meter run at regionals and finished second in the 1600.

In the 800 meter, Josh Adkins came in second place.

“I think everyone did better than they were seeded in every race which is very rare. Most set personal records,” said Wildcats coach Benji Knox.

Chancey Gunnell came in second in the 400 meters and Josh Goad fourth in discus.

The 4×800 girls relay team made up of Stone, Erin Duke, Sofia Micile, and Sarah Stone finished fourth. The 4×400 boys team of Adkins, John Connelly, Gavin Parker, and Nick Breen came in third.

“It’s been a joy to see all of the seniors grow as people and as athletes. Many of these athletes have been equally or more successful in the classroom. Coach Hepler, Weldon, and myself are very proud of each one of these students and what they have meant to us and West Stokes,” Knox said.
