After longtime president Robert Money announced he was stepping down from the West Stokes Prowlers football program, the board of directors has named Scott Cardwell as president and Donnie White head varsity coach.
White brings 25 years of coaching experience. He spent a decade with the King Dolphins football and cheer program before transitioning to a baseball coach.
“Coach Upchurch has been asking me if I was interested in coming back for the last couple of years,” White said. “I’m ready now and probably as excited as the kids.”
White’s looking forward to prepping young athletes for Chestnut Grove’s Middle School football program and eventually to the Friday night lights at West Stokes.
“It’s important to teach kids the right way to play at a young age. A lot of the kids will start a position in the Prowlers and stay with it. When they do that, the coaches are able to help them advance and become even better. That’s how you’re able to win state championships and do the things West has done.”
In 2005 the Prowlers varsity team won the Surry County Little League season championship and super bowl. That same group of players went on to capture a 2A state championship for West Stokes in 2011.
After the Wildcats claimed the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference title last season, the roster showed 18 of the players had been part of the Prowlers.
“Our job is to be sure when they leave they have a good understanding and foundation of mechanics. We want to give them the basics and fundamentals to be smart and strong football players,” White said.
White also wants to ensure his athletes have fun.
“I’ve been coaching for a long time and you can work hard, have some success and have fun doing it.”
