North Stokes baseball program is hosting their annual golf tournament on Sept. 10 at Pine Knolls Golf Course beginning at 8 a.m.
“We’re coming off our most successful season in school history,” explained Vikings assistant coach Chris York. “So while we’re happy about the direction of our baseball program, we also know that in order to continue to compete at a high level we need some upgrades.”
York knows fundraising is a necessity.
“We’re a non-revenue spring sport at a small school so we’ll take all the financial help we can get,” he said. “We were disappointed to lose the funding dedicated to our new field lights, but that’s something out of our control.”
The Vikings current projects include adding a warning track around the outfield fence, removal of the grass from base paths, a new scoreboard, a small concessions area, new sound equipment, new practice gear along with bats, balls, and a batting cage.
“With the boosters dissolving a couple years ago, we still receive enough money from the general athletic fund to buy baseballs for the year, but that’s about it. Everything else falls on us. So, fundraisers are vital,” he said.
The golf tournament cost $55 person which includes free driving range balls, golf, and lunch. Each member of the winning team receives $115 worth of prizes per golfer. Prizes are also awarded to each member of the second and third place teams.
“The format is Captain’s Choice. In my opinion, this is the best format to play because it allows golfers of all skill levels to be able to contribute to their team’s success. But if you’re a below average golfer like myself, we’re offering mulligans for purchase to help lower your score.”
A raffle will be held after lunch with prizes ranging from $20-$400 in value.
“We have autographed Carolina Panthers merchandise, a Nike Cam Newton jersey, lots of restaurant gift cards and our most valuable prize is a one night stay at the Grove Park Inn and two tickets to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville.”
York said the tournament tries to offer something for everyone. Modern Chevrolet, a corporate sponsor for the past three years, will provide a free car to the lucky golfer that hits a hole-in-one on the 11th hole.
