Teresa Hicks has signed on to be South Stokes new varsity cheerleading coach and she’s ready for the challenge. The wife and mother of two brings her own experience as a high school and college cheerleader.
“I enjoy everything about the sport especially the stunts and the girls’ faces when they accomplish what they’re trying to do,” Hicks said.
The new coach has met with the squad and believes the girls are going to have a successful season.
“I’ve known the majority of them since they were little and they’re going to be a good group,” she said. “My goal for them is to get back to competition status. I know they’ve done it in years past and I’m not sure when it fell through but I’d like to get back to that point.”
She’s also planning on doing monthly community service projects with the squad and said the girls are looking forward to it.
“I think it builds character and our town has always supported South. It’s a good way for us to give back,” Hicks said. “I want the girls to have good memories of cheering because you’ll blink and it’ll be gone. I want them to remember that teamwork doesn’t stop when high school ends.”
Hicks said the team is having their annual camp all day Saturday, August 8 and half a day on Sunday.
“Instead of going to an overnight camp we have a company coming here and I’ve heard good things about them,” she said.
Hicks plans to focus on improving the squad’s skills, helping maintain the girls’ grades, and cheering on the other athletes.
“I think this school has a great sense of school pride and we want to keep that going,” she said.
