West Stokes volleyball coach, Jordan Stevens said his varsity team couldn’t be more excited to get the season underway.
“This year I feel like we’re more experienced,” he said.
The team has only one senior, although Stevens said several of the players played during the off season, nearly year-round, and didn’t stop until just last month. He hopes their dedication pays off.
“They’re more focused on being here,” Stevens said.
The coach believes the sport and program is a way of life for some of the girls, adding that it’s their “livelihood.”
This season the volleyball program has 11 freshmen, two of which are playing on the varsity team.
A new addition to the coaching team is Cassie Palmer, a former player of Stevens during his first year coaching. Stevens said it’s nice to see his former players come full circle and give back to the program they were a part of during their time at the school.
“This is important, because she and the others already know the expectations and standards of the program. Hiring Wildcat alumni is a critical step in creating a culture and maintaining tradition and excellence in our program,” Chris Manley, athletic director said of Palmer and several other new coaches that attended West Stokes. “These coaches are stakeholders and they care about the values and principles that make West Stokes great.”
Stevens said he’s a little nervous going into the season, but noted the team played four scrimmages and “had a good showing.”
“I feel really good going into our first game,” Stevens said. “It’s going to be cool to see them play.”
The team will play 21 matches over the course of its season. The Wildcats hosted North Wilkes on Monday in their season opener and fell 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-10).
