South Stokes has a new volleyball coach this year, Ashley Hicks, who previously served as the assistant coach last season.
“I expect they will perform well; they’re going to have to work hard,” Hicks said of her expectations for the team this year.
The Lady Sauras are coming off a strong 22-6 season and hope to continue their success.
Both JV and varsity have 12 players, with four seniors leading the way.
Hicks said the program has one freshman and three sophomore on varsity this season.
“A lot of people are playing different positions,” the coach said.
Senior captains this year are Maggie Joyce, Madalyn McKinney and Hope Cooper.
“They’re very good at getting the team together. They’re good leaders,” Hicks said.
South picked up their first win Tuesday night in a sweep against North Forsyth.
Prior to that the team competed in several scrimmages over the weekend.
“We did rather well. We’ve had to tweak things, but we found out who we like where,” Hicks said.
“It’s been an adjustment, there’s a lot of pressure coming in but it’s an opportunity I’m really looking forward to.”
Hicks said the transition to head coach has been made easier by welcoming attitudes of the players.
Hicks is starting her fifth year of teaching in Stokes County and is currently at Chesnut Grove Middle. Prior to that she played volleyball during her time at East Surry.
Hicks said she has great chemistry with the team, explaining that several of the seniors are on the team were her students during her first year of teaching in Stokes County.
