The South Stokes varsity girls volleyball team defeated Elkin on Monday night with a 3-0 score.

“It went very well,” Ashley Hicks, head coach, said of the Monday night match.

The team scored 25-16 in the first set, 25-21 in the second set, and 25-21 in the third set.

“They’re starting the season off strong and they’re looking good,” Hicks said.

Hicks explained that the Monday night victory served as an encouragement for the team, having lost 2-3 to Cresset Christian Academy on Saturday.

“That put a fire beneath them to get back on track,” Hicks said of the team’s unexpected loss.

Despite loosing to Cresset Christian Academy, the South Stokes team won 3-0 against the Carolina Mustangs on the same day.

Hicks attributes a large degree of the team’s success to the four seniors on the team, three of which serve as team captains; Madelyn McKinney, Hope Cooper, and Maggie Joyce.

“When we get down, they’re very good at bringing people back in and lifting them up, they’re doing a very good job,” Hicks said of the three captains.

As for the captain’s performances, Hicks said that Cooper is setting this year, an adjustment for her considering that prior to this season, she mainly functioned as a hitter.

“She’s definitely starting her senior year off strong,” Hicks said of McKinney.

According to Hicks, Joyce is adjusting well to changes on the team, and she said that she fully expects that she will have a strong senior year as well.

“We’ve tweaked a little bit since Saturday and we really like it and will keep the adjustments,” Hicks said of the changes that have been made since the team’s loss against Cresset Christian Academy on Saturday.

The team is set to play Bishop McGuinness in a home match on Wednesday.

“They’re going to be tough, they’re going to be good competition,” Hicks said of the Wednesday night match.

On Thursday, the team is poised to take on Wilkes Central, which will also be a home match.

“We’ll have a lot of motivation on Thursday,” Hicks said, adding that the team has already beat Wilkes Central earlier in the season.

Stats for the Monday night match include:

  • 11 kills, and 8 digs for Lilly Weaver
  • 10 kills, 12 digs, and 2 aces for Madelyn McKinney
  • 2 aces, and 4 kills for Maggie Joyce
  • 4 kills for Lydia Caudill
  • 4 kills, and 31 assists for Hope Cooper
