The Lady Wildcats, ranked seventh in 2A, hosted Forbush, ranked third, for an all-important Western Piedmont Athletic soccer game last week and the Cats came away with a 3-2 win in overtime.
“Not only was this game important because of the conference standing, but also the state rankings,” stated Wildcats coach Chris Manley. “A couple years ago we tied for the conference and they had to pull our names out of a hat for the No. 1 seed from our conference. We go from a one seed in the state tournament to an 11 seed because of luck. We want to take luck out of the equation this year.”
After the first half, the Wildcats and Falcons were knotted at the break on Wildcats Micha Harris first half goal.
In the second half, each team tallied one goal with Zoe Wehr scoring for the Wildcats. In the extra period, Harris found the back of the net for the win and the advantage went to the Lady Wildcats.
“I’m proud of the girls and their resilience,” said Manley with a smile on his face. “We just need to stay focused and hungry and close out the season.”
The Wildcats improved to 14-2-1 overall and undefeated in conference play. They’ll prepare to face North Surry this week in another WPAC game.
